For Evil? Or for Justice?
Based on the manga of the same name by Tsutsui Tetsuya, Prophecy [Yokokuhan] (2015), directed by master of mystery and thriller Nakamura Yoshino, gives us a glimpse at the makings of a vigilante and asks us just what kind of society do we want? A society that turns a blind eye to the plight of it’s most down trodden, or one that seeks to up hold justice and give those down on their luck another chance at life?
Prophecy (2015) follows ‘Gates’ [short for Bill Gates] – played by Ikuta Toma (The Mole Song, Brain Man) – an ex-IT programmer turned leader of vigilante group “Shinbunshi” as he begins a public campaign against wrong-doers he feels have escaped justice, and Inspector Yoshino – played by Toda Erika (Death Note 1 & 2) – of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Cybercrime Unit as she attempts to track “Shinbunshi” down.
Inspector Yoshino (Toda Erika) is an accomplished investigator in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Cyber crimes Division, but she is about to meet her match in the form of vigilante “Shinbunshi”, a masked individual who uploads video “prophecies” of crimes they intended to commit. Soon enough Yoshino discovers that there is more to “Shinbunshi” than she first thought when she realizes she isn’t dealing with a lone wolf, but an organised group that continues to up the stakes with its latest “prophecy” – the death of their next victim.
